Assessment

Roman soldier
In teaching primary history we are fortunate not to have summative assessment (in the form of SATs) imposed on us. This means we can assess in the very best way, that is, formatively and continuously.
Assessment needs to be an integral part of on-going classroom activity. If children are to learn, they need to:

  • Know what they're aiming for - so provide them with a brief, comprehensible description of what doing history involves
  • Receive frequent feedback on how they are progressing, in terms of their own previous performance
  • Understand what they need to do to improve.
