History and Literacy

Children looking at booksThere are strong natural links between history and English. Indeed, there is a rich inter-relationship and inter-dependence between them.

Both history and English are concerned with language and its uses. Both explore feelings, situations, motives, and relationships, using an informed imagination to understand complex human situations.

A well-chosen historical enquiry engages children imaginatively. When the focus turns to literacy objectives, a context with meaning has been established. Within this context the children can think and learn.
